Background of the Study

Psychodrama therapy, a form of experiential therapy, is often used to help individuals express their emotions, confront traumatic memories, and improve coping mechanisms. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can result from experiencing or witnessing traumatic events. Trauma victims often struggle with managing their emotions and may experience flashbacks, anxiety, and emotional numbing. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of psychodrama therapy in managing PTSD among trauma victims at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Statement of the Problem

PTSD is a prevalent mental health condition among trauma victims, and while psychodrama has been used as a therapeutic intervention, its effectiveness in managing PTSD in Nigerian settings remains under-explored. This study will evaluate how psychodrama therapy can help alleviate PTSD symptoms and improve the mental well-being of trauma victims.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of psychodrama therapy in reducing PTSD symptoms among trauma victims.
  2. To evaluate the emotional and psychological improvements of PTSD patients undergoing psychodrama therapy.
  3. To explore the perceptions of patients and therapists regarding the benefits and challenges of psychodrama therapy.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is psychodrama therapy in reducing PTSD symptoms among trauma victims at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uyo?
  2. What emotional and psychological improvements are observed in PTSD patients undergoing psychodrama therapy?
  3. What are the perceptions of both patients and therapists about the effectiveness of psychodrama therapy for PTSD?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Psychodrama therapy does not significantly reduce PTSD symptoms among trauma victims.
  2. There is no significant improvement in the emotional and psychological well-being of PTSD patients who undergo psychodrama therapy.
  3. Both patients and therapists perceive psychodrama therapy to be ineffective in managing PTSD.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on trauma victims undergoing psychodrama therapy at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uyo. Limitations include the potential for subjective bias in self-reported assessments from patients and the availability of psychodrama sessions.
